Quivira Golf Club Receives Second Golf Digest Editors’ Choice Award

In Los Cabos, Play, Stay by Suzanne Koch

Golfers looking for another course to tackle should consider Quivira Golf Club who recently received an Editors’ Choice Award for Best in Travel 2017 by Golf Digest as part of their upcoming May issue, an award they also received last year as well. The Editors’ Choice Best in Golf awards were introduced last year and includes categories like Best Teachers, 100 Greatest Courses, Hot List and more and rate “the best of everything in the total golf lifestyle.”

“Whether it’s a buddies trip or a getaway with our significant other, what we seek from a golf resort is an experience greater than our usual weekend round,” Golf Digest said of its selection criteria. “We want to be pampered on and off the fairways,” noting that “the joy of a great golf resort” is that “it’s overstocked with activities and diversions, and we get to pick our pleasures.”

This year, Quivira was one of only six resort facilities chosen in the Mexico and Central America section of The Americas division. Opened in 2014, the signature Jack Nicklaus design is exclusive to Quivira residents and Pueblo Bonito resort guests and is highlighted by its varied landscapes that include steep cliffs, massive dunes and panoramic views. Here’s five reasons why this course is a must-play for anyone.

1. Dazzling Views

With more oceanfront exposure than any other course in Cabo, Quivira’s views are enough to cause you to lose track of your ball. In fact, every single one of Quivira’s holes features views of the Pacific. Golfers can look forward to the fifth hole, a 275 feet perch above the rolling waters that houses a clifftop comfort station and some of the course’s most stunning views.

2. New Changes and Modifications

With the aim to enhance playability, some recent changes have been made to the course including removing the “transition bunkers” on the donwslope at the par-4 fifth hole. Another change can be found at the 13th hole where the tiny green has been smoothed out to create more pin positions. And at the 15th hole, the central hazard has been modified to create a better risk-reward scenario for big hitters. Additional changes are set to be completed later this year to improve Quivira’s playability even more.

3. Just-As-Impressive Practice Facilities

With such stunning playing facilities, it’s no surprise that Quivira’s practice facilities are just as good. Golfers can take advantage of a double-ended driving range that parallels the ocean along with a large practice putting green and dedicated short game area—all with onshore breezes.

4. Comfort Stations

As an all-inclusive facility with four comfort stations, Quivira provides plenty of opportunities to take a break and fuel up. The courses favorite comfort station is Oasis, an open-air halfway house located in the dunes adjacent to the eighth green serving up plenty of Mexican specialties including its signature Crunchy David, prepared with crispy flour tortillas, flank steak, monterey jack and cheddar cheeses and salad fixings.

5. Location, Location, Location

While many nearby courses can boast a breathtaking Cabo location, only Quivira can say it’s located at the spot where the Sea of Cortes meets the Pacific Ocean. And you’ll know you’re there when you spot the lighthouse.
