Solaz Resort, an Artful Tribute to the Baja

In Los Cabos, Stay by Suzanne Koch

Cabo’s newest hotel, Solaz Resort opened this past September and pays tribute to its beautiful Baja location. Located between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, the hotel sits on its own stretch of sandy beach, a rare feature for many resorts in the area. Since it sits in between two natural rockbeds, the location offers guests one of the only swimmable beaches in the area.

Solaz Resort has 128 rooms, each with its own private entrance and patio, contemporary furnishings and original art and rooms feature an indoor-outdoor floor plan with private terraces that offer stunning views.

Guests at Solaz will be greeted by a world of authentic Mexican art from famed Mexican artist César López Negrete, who’s spent years traveling and studying the Baja’s landscape. Negrete has created sculptures and specialty crafted furnishings. The resort also has an indigenous gallery, El Gabinete “Del Barco,” which showcases regional artifacts like a 43-foot-long whale skeleton and a historical map collection.

The resort itself also stands as a piece of art. It was designed by renowned Mexican architectural firm Sordo Madaleno and blends desert vegetation with quarry stone, granite, marble and wood, to create a cascading terrace. The property features only endemic species and flora, creating a “dry jungle.”

Culinary offerings at Solaz include four unique restaurants and lounges including Mako, serving wood-fired flat breads, steaks and seafood; La Cava, home to more than 2,500 vintages; and Xocolatl, a modern chocolate shop and ice cream boutique with indigenous treats from Mexico’s region. Besides digging in to authentic eats, guests can enjoy tailor-made, exclusive experiences like private helicopter trips to explore the rare Cave Paintings of Baja and swimming with whale sharks, to Baja inspired culinary classes and more. Each room will have a dedicated Artisan butler who will help create these one-of-a-kind, tailor-made experiences.

And for those looking to tie the knot, Solaz offers the largest event space at any luxury hotel in Los Cabos with dedicated expert planners for both intimate and grand-scale events. The hotel is able to accommodate more than 1,000 guests across its 20,000 square feet of meeting, wedding and event space.
