Explore the All-New Bacalar Ecopark

In Play, Playa del Carmen & Tulum by Christina Silvestri

The charming town of Bacalar, a place of natural splendor and tranquility, now boasts a breathtaking new Ecopark that’s just waiting to be explored.

Nestled in the heart of Quintana Roo in the southeastern region of Mexico, this expansive 7,000-square-meter (~7,534-square-foot) sanctuary invites you to immerse yourself in the wonders of the world-renowned “Laguna de los 7 Colores” (Lagoon of the Seven Colors) in Bacalar.

As you step into the Bacalar Ecopark, you’ll be greeted by a picturesque tourist dock that serves as a stunning backdrop for Insta-worthy photographs. There’s plenty of opportunity to appreciate the awe-inspiring natural beauty that surrounds you. Take leisurely strolls along the park’s impressive linear dock and indulge in refreshing dips in the pristine lagoon.

The Ecopark offers more than just breathtaking scenery. It provides open spaces for families to bond, a laboratory, meeting rooms and even a classroom, which are all designed with intention to create a harmonious environment that fosters knowledge and awareness about environmental preservation. There’s even a museum exhibit resembling a 10,000-year timeline that’s engraved onto wood to showcase the area’s unique biodiversity throughout history.

One of the primary objectives of the Bacalar Ecopark is to cultivate ecological consciousness and environmental stewardship. It’s an ideal destination for large groups to experience the joys of the lagoon while learning about its conservation and the importance of protecting the abundant stromatolite fossils found in the area.

Stromatolites, often overlooked but vital to the lagoon’s cleanliness and vibrant shades of blue, take center stage at the Ecopark. A dedicated classroom, laboratory and outdoor exhibits showcase the significance of these living organisms and their role in preserving the Bacalar Lagoon.

Architects C733 employed a thoughtful strategy to seamlessly integrate the Ecopark with the site’s rich flora and fauna, minimizing disruption wherever possible. The structures were carefully constructed to avoid mangroves and trees, allowing visitors to glide effortlessly along the lagoon’s edge. The use of locally-sourced certified chicozapote wood in the efficient structural system demonstrates the commitment to sustainability. The design also utilizes shaded areas that are naturally created by tall trees.

Moreover, the Ecopark employs eco-friendly practices to reduce its environmental impact. The construction footprint was minimized, while additional measures were taken to mitigate water runoff pollution from the nearby town. Natural filters, depressions, rain gardens and the rehabilitation of degraded mangroves help preserve the delicate ecosystem.

Conveniently located just 500 meters from the San Felipe Fort, adjacent to the well-known Balneario Ejidal, and within the city, the Ecopark offers easy accessibility. Park admission is $20 pesos for tourists, while locals can enter free. The Bacalar Ecopark operates daily from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
