Considered the Olympic Games in the world of architecture and design, the Prix Versailles is a prestigious annual prize awarded at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. The awards acknowledge achievement in architecture in categories including Shops & Stores, Shopping Malls, Hotels and Restaurants across six regions: Africa and West Asia – Central America, the South and the Caribbean – North America – Central Asia and the Northeast – South Asia and the Pacific – Europe.

Most recently, Mexico City-based AoMa Estudio – Constanze Martens and Jihei Aoki took the top prize for Best Hotels in North America for their work on Live Aqua Urban Resort San Miguel de Allende.

Live Aqua San Miguel de Allende’s design focuses on connecting guests with the history and culture of its place. The firm’s main focus was to bring together the old with the modern day. A total of 153 rooms feature blurred boundaries and open spaces with bathrooms playing double duty as decoration with stunning glass walls. Aside from glass, other elements at play include wood and brick in soffits and traditional Mexican mosaic in walls. Hanging luminaries above bathtubs were made in collaboration with their team while tropical wooden headboards add a warm touch and cohesive element.
