Redesign Your Home With These Tips From One&Only Resorts’ Director of Design

In Architecture & Design by Suzanne Koch

With many of us stuck inside our homes right now, it’s easy to see why we might have the itch to redesign our space into something fresh and new. Elie Choucair, Director of Design for Kerzner International, the team behind One&Only resorts, is sharing the different factors he takes into consideration when designing resort spaces and how you can easily implement them into your home today.

Wall Colors

Color can greatly affect the mood and vibe of a space. Elie recommends neutral tones like beige and grey shades, that adapt to all types of interiors and are known to be more relaxing. They create soft and warm spaces that can easily be spruced up with pops of colorful artwork. Take One&Only Le Saint Géran as a dreamy example. A greige wall color, beige marble floors and washed wood blend together and are complemented by patterned wallpaper, accent pieces and accessories.

Design Process

The guest experience is the top priority when designing for One&Only resorts, focusing heavily on the functionality of each space. To mimic the luxury of a One&Only guest room, check out the following criteria that Elie takes into consideration.

  • A focus on the functionality of the space, without neglecting the aesthetics
  • Evoke a residential and welcoming feel
  • Provide privacy and seclusion, without distractions
  • Generate a sense of place and location
  • A focus on the overall experience
  • Create joy for all guests

Upcoming Trends

Elie sites the fashion catwalks as being one of the first places to spot new trends before they take over interior and living environments. This year, he notes Classic Blue, the Pantone Color of the Year, being a trending color. The use of textures has also increased in popularity, especially with layering textures in same or similar colors. Lastly, built-in concepts are paving the way for small living spaces and minimalist kitchens. One example is for appliances and accessories to be fit so that they disappear into flush cabinets, creating uninterrupted surfaces, taking advantage of the most space available.
