Growing up around food, Bonnie Birkel’s playgrounds as a child were vegetable gardens and sprawling land where livestock wandered. Her parents’ love for growing and preparing family meals was instilled in Birkel at a young age and it stayed with her to this day. Before she and her husband obtained a large cattle ranch in Texas, Bonnie spent her time globetrotting to exotic locales and trying worldly dishes in places like the Serengeti and Alsace. Her love for food grew stronger and it was a no-brainer for her to become the food and beverage manager at the ranch where she would serve up thousands of steak dinners (sometimes in one night) to hungry diners. After feeding and caring for an endless number of guests, Bonnie became known as “La Patrona,” which is now plastered across the menus at her own restaurant in San Jose del Cabo.
La Patrona is a warm and sophisticated dining experience reflective of Bonnie’s culinary experiences and skills. Priding itself on fresh quality ingredients, the menu at La Patrona changes with the season but maintains guest favorites. Located in Plaza Paulina, guests can dine indoors or on the walled patio where white tablecloths and a glowing ambiance complement the wine list and dishes of seafood, steaks and more.
If you’re stuck on what to order try one of the house favorites like the seafood crepes, filled with lobster, shrimp and fish and covered in a spicy lobster sauce or try one of the beef creations; the double cut glazed pork rib-eye chop and the beef osso buco—which beef shank is simmered with rosemary, thyme and sage and served on top of truffle mashed potatoes—are both popular and irresistable. For those in need of some Baja flair the colorful chiles en nogada doesn’t disappoint with its creamy walnut sauce smothered on top of a spicy poblano chile filled with ground pork loin and topped off with pomegranate seeds.
