Old Hollywood Glitz Meets Modern Luxury at Casa Kimberly

In Puerto Vallarta, Stay by Suzanne Koch

Discover history, romance and luxury in the heart of sunny Puerto Vallarta at Casa Kimberly, where layers of historic Hollywood passion still hover in the breezy air. Located among the Sierra Madre Mountains and overlooking Banderas Bay, Casa Kimberly is more than just another boutique hotel. Before Puerto Vallarta became what it is today, it served as the choice destination for a somewhat quiet getaway for Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton looking for relief from flashing cameras. The couple acquired two adjacent casitas on a hillside connected by a bridge and it quickly became a haven for their intensely passionate relationship.

Today, Janice Chatterton, proprietor of the nearby, renowned Hacienda San Angel, recently renovated and reimagined Casa Kimberly into a glamorous hideaway, complete with nine suites, a pool, boutique spa, restaurant and bar. The hotel boasts Colonial Mexican design fused with hints of Hollywood glamour and the suites are adorned with sophisticated features like claw foot tubs, patio fountains, brick domes and even hand-painted tile ceilings.

Guests can choose to stay in Elizabeth Taylor’s bedroom where they can waltz across her commissioned pink marble or bathe in her heart-shaped bathtub that still sits in its original spot. A large terrace, private pool and Jacuzzi make up the rest of the suite whose views are as gorgeous as you would expect. Guests can also choose to stay in her lover’s suite just across the Puente Del Amor (Bridge of Love), which is a replica of the Bridge of Sighs, in the Richard Burton Suite that’s located in the late star’s personal quarters.

For those looking to dine like the stars, modern and traditional Mexican cuisine make up the menu at The Iguana, the open-air, fine dining restaurant that’s decorated with crystal chandeliers and a tequila bar where guests can sip on rare tequilas and mescals while catching glimpses of themselves in the mirror bar back, a classic touch to the elegant atmosphere.
