For Dia de Los Muertos, San Miguel de Allende is home to the five-day La Calaca Festival, highlighted by the annual, highly-attended Catrinas Parade. The popular event features towering Catrina and Catrine puppets plus plenty of fun activities for all. Attendees can hire one of the many professional makeup artists on hand to dress up their face into a beautiful festive skull. The festival also features a costume contest, art installations, local businesses, and individual artists and art organizations from around Mexico to showcase Dia de Los Muertos-inspired creativity.
Where to Stay
Just a few minutes from the pulse of the town’s main plaza, Casa Delphine is a five-suite boutique hotel that recently opened in April. Guests can revel in the designer space, which was created by Los Angeles-based designer Amanda Keidan. Suites feature cantera fireplaces, hand-designed furniture from local artists, balconies overlooking the private courtyard and more. On Saturday, Nov. 2 the hotel will have an altar on display for deceased relatives of staff and guests, plus a makeup artist will be onsite to offer Calaca make up for guests.

What to Eat
Casa Delphine is hosting a special tarot card reading “As You Were” dinner for Dia de Los Muertos. Taking place Oct. 29 at 7 p.m., diners are encouraged to come dressed as they were in a past life for the four-course meal complete with themed starters, cocktails and wine. There will also be a mini reading by tarot card historian Miguel Canseco. $125 per person.
