In Play, Yucatán by Christina Silvestri

Mexico’s southern state of Yucatán is well-known for its glittering beaches off the Gulf of Mexico to the north and lush tropical forest that’s inset inland. From the picturesque colonial capital of Mérida to the rich ancient Mayan history, as evidenced by the abundance of well-preserved archeological sites and artifacts throughout the area, there is absolutely no shortage of things to see and explore throughout the Yucatán. Here are some of the most Instagrammable locations in all of Yucatán, Mexico.

1. Chichén Itzá

Chichén Itzá is a pristinely preserved Mayan city and archeological site that features a ton of ruins that date back more than 1,000 years ago. The ancient city is known for its massive step pyramid, ball court, temples and amazing architectural design.

2. Las Coloradas (“Pink Lakes”)

Las Coloradas is another hidden treasure found within the Yucatán Peninsula. The vibrant hue of the pink-colored waters is a result of the reflection of the red- and pink-colored marine life, like plankton, shrimp and algae, that reflect off the water and become concentrated as the water evaporates.

3. Celestún

The small fishing village of Celestún offers a low-key escape along with prime Instagram spots. Located about a 90-minute drive west from Mérida, snap a beach pic on the swing beneath the colorful “Celestún” sign, while thousands of pink flamingos can be seen at the Celestún Biosphere Reserve during the November to February mating season.

4. Izamal, “The Yellow City”

The under-the-radar town of Izamal is colloquially known as Mexico’s “La Ciudad Amarilla,” or “The Yellow City,” for obvious reasons: Practically the entire town is painted a bright canary yellow. The easily walkable colonial city is also a designated “Pueblo Mágico” due to the city’s rich cultural heritage that dates back to the Pre-Columbian era.

5. Mérida

As Yucatán’s colorful capital, Mérida is a vibrant and centrally located city near the Gulf of Mexico that serves as a great starting point to explore the rest of what the Yucatán Peninsula has to offer. Enjoy the charming cafes, cultural attractions and close proximity to the region’s UNESCO-listed archaeological sites, nature reserves and Pueblos Mágicos.
