Cultural Oasis at Puerto Escondido: Casa Wabi

In Architecture & Design by Isabella Moreno

Casa Wabi is a magical place known in the beginning only by the Art People, it is located on the shores of the Pacific Ocean a few minutes from the surfer favorite spot:Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. Not only is it privileged by its location, the quality of construction and for the honesty of its materials; it’s a project and design of the talented and famous Japanese architect Tadao Ando.Casa Wabi is a non-profit civil association funded by public and private donations. It is a space dedicated to the multidisciplinary use whose main objective is to promote the exchange of ideas between artists from different disciplines with the local communities of the state of Oaxaca.

The dream begins with the Mexican artist Bosco Sodi, working with a sensational curation team under the command of Patricia Martin. The architecture is designed to accentuate the context in which it is located. Framing views whose colors create pictures within the space, causing shadows in the places that are necessary and having baths of light in the courtyards and corridors in a perfect way to feel as if we were in a total space of coexistence with the environment, the architecture and with oneself, it is without doubt a space that exists for both principles: to inspire and to become inspired.

This wonderful House is made up by six private rooms, two shared ateliers, a living room, a projection room, an exhibition gallery, an outdoor sculpture garden and multiple recreational spaces. Casa Wabi exists with the intention of promoting the regional social welfare using as a bridge and main tool art in all the different facets. It is composed of projects in various disciplines, developing educational projects, with cultural exchange, environmental protection and infrastructure. The Wabi Foundation focuses on four programs addressed to work with the community:residences, cinema, exhibitions and gardening.

“We believe that bringing children and young people to this type of experience, complements their formal education, providing new tools from creative and experimental languages, which may be increased to incorporate in your day to day.”
