5 Reasons Why the Mexican Caribbean is a Top Global Travel Destination

The Mexican Caribbean, which includes popular destinations such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, has become one of the fastest-growing travel destinations in the world. With its beautiful beaches, world-class resorts and an array of natural and historical attractions, it’s no wonder that more and more travelers are flocking to this sun-soaked region. Below are five reasons why the Mexican Caribbean is a hit among travelers worldwide.

1. The Mexican Caribbean is Home to the Most New Hotels in Mexico

One of the primary reasons behind the region’s success is its consistent growth in new hotels and accommodations. Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum have reported several years of consecutive growth, attracting significantly more investment than other states in the country. Additionally, new projects are in the works across the region, including the underdeveloped stretches of land, such as Costa Mujeres. The region is set to have 2,000 new rooms, thanks to a new investment by Invertol. Meanwhile, Cancun alone is set to inaugurate over 3,000 new hotel rooms this year, including the massive AVA Resort, with 1,700 rooms, slated for opening in late 2023.

2. World-Class Infrastructure Projects

Massive infrastructure projects are under construction, including the Maya Train, a state-of-the-art railway project set to connect major Mexican Caribbean destinations. The 1500-kilometer-long train project, once operational, will make travel easier and more comfortable for travelers. Moreover, Cancun is building a new bridge connecting the resort district to the downtown area, easing traffic and congestion.

3. Safety is a Priority

Despite occasional headlines about safety, the Mexican Caribbean is one of the safest destinations in the country. Resort hotspots, including Cancun and Playa del Carmen, are heavily guarded by armed forces such as police, tourist police, and troops from the Mexican Army and Navy. Moreover, hundreds of all-inclusive resorts provide around-the-clock security for travelers, with advanced security systems and armed guards. Travelers can feel safe walking in touristy areas as long as they follow essential safety tips.

4. The Mexican Caribbean is the Best Connected Region in the Country

Cancun International Airport is one of the world’s busiest airports for international travelers, with an excellent network of flights to and from North and South America, as well as Europe. The airport transported over 30 million passengers last year and currently has 41 direct flights to the United States, including all major U.S. hubs. Both legacy carriers and low-cost operators regularly announce new flights to the region.

5. Growing Array of Historical & Natural Attractions

The Mexican Caribbean already boasts an impressive number of historical, cultural, and natural attractions. However, the region is always working on making more sights available to travelers. Earlier this year, Chetumal became home to the world’s second-largest blue hole, measuring 900 feet in depth. The massive Maya Train has unveiled hundreds of new Mayan artifacts, many of which will be displayed in a new museum in Mérida. The train will also open up new ancient ruins for travelers to explore, including Ichkabal, which boasts some of the most complex Mayan history.
