Riviera Maya is the Most-Visited Destination in the Mexican Caribbean

While Cancun has been a well-known travel destination for the past few years as a go-to tropical vacation spot, another resort location in Mexico has been named the most-visited destination in the Mexican Caribbean.

The latest statistics for 2022 show that the Riviera Maya has surpassed Cancun as the most popular destination in the Mexican Caribbean. The Riviera Maya welcomed 40% of all visitors in the state of Quintana Roo, while Cancun welcomed 34%. Meanwhile, smaller sought-after destinations, such as Holbox and Bacalar, received 2.8% and 1.2% of visitors, respectively.

The Secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo reported an increase of three million visitors to the region compared to the same period in 2019. Additionally, 60% of tourists now come from the U.S., Canada and Mexico, while the number of visitors from Brazil has decreased in recent years. This trend has resulted in local North American tourists filling up hotels and hotspots in both Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

The Riviera Maya, or Mayan Riviera, is a coastal region located on the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. It stretches approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) from the town of Puerto Morelos in the north to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere, just south of Tulum. The region includes several well-known tourist destinations, such as Akumal, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Interestingly, Cancun, Holbox and Isla Mujeres, though part of the Mexican Caribbean, are not technically within the Mayan Riviera, although they are often said to be as these popular tourist locales are all within close proximity to one another as the region is highly marketed as a popular vacation destination.

Boasting beautiful white sand beaches, turquoise waters and lush tropical vegetation, the Riviera Maya is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, vibrant nightlife and adventure activities, such as as snorkeling, scuba diving, cenotes and zip-lining, attracting both locals and international travelers alike.
