A record-breaking number of tourists have visited the popular Mexican resort destination of Cancún this year so far, indicating that tourism will remain strong into the holiday season.
By the end of the year, nearly 6 million tourists are predicted to visit the Mexican Caribbean destination, which would break all previous tourism records to date.
From a wealth of all-inclusive resorts and breathtaking beaches and natural scenery to family-friendly activities and delicious dining, let’s take a look at why Cancún appeals to so many as one of the hottest places to stay, live and play in all of Mexico.
Perfect Weather & Beautiful Beaches
The first major draw of Cancún? The pretty much perfect year-round weather and stunning white-sand beaches make it a true escape to soak up the sunshine. In January, usually the coldest month of the year, the temperature rarely drops below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, while the average high temperature in the colder months is 84 degrees Fahrenheit, making Cancún a great winter getaway.
There is no shortage of places to stay in Cancún, including almost 100 hotels and resorts in and around the Cancún Hotel Zone. More and more five-star luxury resorts, including The Ritz-Carlton, Waldorf Astoria and Grand Hyatt, are all opening new locations in the area in rapid succession. Many all-inclusive hotels and resorts offer gourmet restaurants, 24-hour in-room dining and helpful concierges that can arrange fun daily activities.
A Rich History
Cancún is steeped in a rich ancient Mayan history that can be witnessed through many ruins and museums where you can learn about Mayan culture. Visitors have the opportunity to explore these sites both directly within the convenience of the city as well as just outside of the city center to make for a fun day trip. One of the most famous Mayan ruins, Chichén Itzá, is located just a couple of hours from Cancún along with numerous other amazing and well-preserved ruins.
A Foodie’s City
Foodies will delight in the abundance of available cuisine and culinary experiences that Cancún has to offer. From authentic Mexican street food to elevated fine dining, it’s possible to have great food with every meal. The broader appeal of Cancún as an international resort destination has attracted some of the finest chefs to the city who create innovative dishes with local flavors and fresh ingredients.
From ziplining through the jungle to diving into cenotes or swimming with wale sharks, there are many adventures to be had in and around Cancún. Visitors can also enjoy adventure parks, including Xcaret, Xplor, and Xel-Ha, that can help coordinate outdoor activities and more.
