A coalition of Baja California Sur nonprofit and philanthropic organizations, along with several businesses, have joined forces to form the Baja California Sur Community Alliance (BCSCA) in response to the medical supply shortage and food crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The Alliance is made up of regional nonprofits, foundations, and businesses working in coordination with the local, state and federal government.
BCSCA seeks to achieve these three objectives:
- No person in BCS goes without food during the period of the pandemic
- Support medical services by providing the tools necessary to effectively treat patients during the crisis
- Become a permanent network of support that is able to be activated in future emergencies
BCSCA has the goal of raising $7.5 million in the coming weeks to distribute food and hygiene supplies for more than 40,000 families in Baja California Sur and supporting health institutions with medical supplies for the next several months as the Covid-19 crisis evolves.
As of April 24, $450,000 worth of medical equipment and food aid has been purchased and distributed with another $1.4 million raised. Moreover, a private donor through the International Community Foundation has offered a 2:1 match up to $500,000 toward emergency food relief, which will result in $1 million for the families of Baja California Sur. This same donor has provided a 1:1 match up to $250,000 for medical supplies.
