4. Thatta, Pakistan

The Shah Jahan mosque in Thatta, Pakistan. It's the middle of the day, and it's approximately blazing hot. In the shade of the mosque, dozens of men are sprawled on the vibrant blue tiles of the mosque floor, snoring gently as they sleep through the day in an attempt to make sunset (and iftar) come sooner. We're like ghosts wandering through the mosque, unnoticed by the sleeping crowds as we tiptoe barefoot through its archways and admire its tiled ceilings. The mosque was built in the 1600s, a gift from a Mughal emperor to the local Sindh people as a thank you for their hospitality. Hmm, if only we could afford such extravagant thank you gifts for everyone we've met so far…
