Stay In Style at Habitas Tulum

In Playa del Carmen & Tulum, Stay by Suzanne Koch

Looking for a ruggedly chic way to vacation? Habitas, the popular pop-up retreat series, has introduced its first ever boutique hotel in magical Tulum. After hosting multiple successful four-day retreats in unique locations across the world (Ibiza, Los Angeles, Nevada), Habitas founders, Oliver Ripley, Kfir Levy and Eduardo Castillo decided to open a flagship ‘home.’ With Tulum as its location, Habitas Tulum—like its pop-up retreats—focuses on experiences rather than amenities.

Accommodations include 32 rooms that are actually luxurious canvas tents, perched on wooden platforms with palapa roofs. With jungle and beachfront locations, the 400-sq.-ft. rooms feature a king-sized bed, hardwood floors, air-conditioning and high-speed wifi along with private outdoor rain showers and covered front porches. While the majority of the rooms sit back in the jungle, five oceanfront suites are primely located beachfront with expansive views of the Caribbean.

The hotel’s restaurant, Moro, is housed on the ground floor of the only permanent structure on site, a three-story glass and steel pavilion. Led by Chef Frederico Cappi, Moro focuses on locally caught seafood with the simplicity of the Mediterranean and the vibrant flavors of Latin America. With locally sourced ingredients, a beachside open-plan kitchen and a blend of worldly dishes and regional favorites, Moro is exactly what you would expect to indulge in while in Tulum.

In addition to the restaurant, the three-story building also houses an open-air spot for daily ashtanga yoga classes along with a relaxed clubhouse and and an adjacent beachfront bar where craft cocktails and fresh-pressed juices are aplenty. To relax, guests will find a holistic spa with treatments incorporating ancient Mayan traditions and using a mind, body and spirit approach. The hotel also has late night DJ sets, live music, cinema nights and more, all to encourage guests to have an inspiring stay.

Habitas has plans to open additional hotels in Malibu, California and Namibia along with members’ clubs in New York and Los Angeles.
