In Architecture & Design, Los Cabos, Stay by Suzanne Koch

Searching for a good looking hotel? Head to Grand Velas Los Cabos who recently won six gold medals at the exhibition of the IX Ibero-American Biennial CIDI of Interior Design, Design and Landscaping 2017-2018 in Mexico City. The resort’s interiors, furnishings and decorations were commissioned to five different interior design firms, a first for any hotel.

Juan Bernardo Dolores, President of the Ibero-American Council of Interior Designers (CIDI) said “In 20 years of Biennale we had never observed a project that was divided in many studies of architecture and interior design to achieve an extraordinary and quality design.”

The design firms included Melin Castro Designs, Ernesto Vela Architects, Cassal Diseño, Niz + Chauvet Arquitectos and Ezequiel Farca. Additionally, Ricardo Elias, who designed the highly acclaimed Grand Velas Resorts in Riviera Maya and Riviera Nayarit, returned once again to Grand Velas as the architectural designer for the Los Cabos location. Elias, principal of Elias and Elias Architects in Guadalajara, designed the resort to exist harmoniously within the dramatic topography of its environment.

The unique idea to incorporate many studies was conceived by Eduardo Vela Ruiz, President of Velas Resorts. Highlights at the resort include the interiors at Piaf (feature photo) which are a modern take on France in the 1940’s to 60’s when Edith Piaf was at the height of her career, the natural and warm interiors of Cocina de Autor and Koi Bar, the art-filled lobby, the glamorous interiors of Frida which draws inspiration from Frida Kahlo’s work and the late 1940s, the nautically-inspired Azul restaurant and the overall unique architectural design of the resort.
