La 68: When Culture Becomes Fun

In Architecture & Design by Ali Madrazo

Elena Poniatowska is a Mexican/French writer, activist and journalist, whose work and human quality has been recognized through the years in many countries. A few years ago a cultural center in Merida, the capital of the Yucatan, was opened and named in honor of this woman. La68 Casa de Cultura Elena Poniatowska promotes, spreads and rescues culture in its various forms. One of its strategies is to open spaces and exchange knowledge. It is divided into 5 categories: movies, where you can see diverse art films; restaurants, where you’ll be delighted with smoothies, pizzas or enchiladas; store, a place to find beautiful Mexican crafts; workshops, an excellent choice to spend your time in yoga, jewelry or writing classes; and finally, services, an option to organize your presentations, conferences or social events right here. One of my favorite plans is the outdoor dinner and cinema, the perfect romantic date. The decor, simple but welcoming, reflects the Mexican folklore in all its expression. It is not the most elegant place in Merida, but it is definitely the most cozy and enriching. If you are just passing through town or if you live here, you can’t miss the opportunity of visiting this fantastic spot.
