Mexican Airlines Surge with New Flight Routes

Mexican airlines are broadening their horizons as they announce a slew of new direct flights to the U.S. and domestically, riding the wave of the country’s reinstatement to an FAA Category 1 aviation safety rating. At the forefront of this surge is a collaboration between Aeroméxico and Delta Airlines, and a significant expansion by low-cost carrier Viva Aerobus.

Marco Antonio del Prete Tercero, head of Querétaro’s Sustainable Development Ministry (SEDESU), recently announced the start of two daily routes from Querétaro International Airport to Detroit, Mich. and Atlanta, Ga. that will both commence in at the beginning of 2024.

Aeroméxico’s ambition doesn’t end there. In tandem with Delta, the airline intends to kick off 17 new routes, leading to almost 60 daily flights to the U.S. by July 2024. This indicates a 35% increase in flights from 2023. Not to be outdone, Delta is set to initiate 34 daily flights to seven unique Mexican destinations. Together, the duo is projected to offer over 90 daily flights between Mexico and the U.S. in 2024.

Highlighting the expansive route list are U.S. cities, including Salt Lake City, New York, Los Angeles and McAllen, Texas. These flights will operate from key Mexican international airports, including both of Mexico City’s (AICM and AIFA), along with Monterrey, Mérida and Guadalajara.

Meanwhile, Viva Aerobus has launched two new routes from Mérida to Miami and Orlando, Fla. The Orlando service begins on July 1, 2024, with three flights weekly, and Miami takes off on July 2, 2024 with four weekly departures. This is in addition to Viva Aerobus’s recent announcement of routes between Monterrey and six U.S. cities, marking their largest expansion.

Furthermore, Viva Aerobus is harnessing the potential of Mexico City’s Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) after servicing over 600,000 passengers between January and August 2023. The airline has announced that will institute a whopping 17 new routes by summer 2024, spanning from Tulum to Durango. With this, Viva will boast 27 routes, 72 daily flights and 12 aircrafts based at AIFA.

General Isidoro Pastor, director general of AIFA, expressed his gratitude, stating, “This historic growth of Viva marks a before and after in the connectivity of Mexico City.”

With these strategic expansions, travelers have a plethora of options to explore, as Mexican airlines redefine the skies and create new bridges of connection.
