Grand Velas Los Cabos: A Wine-Lovers Paradise

In Dine, Los Cabos, Stay by Suzanne Koch

If you plan on visiting Grand Velas Los Cabos, you better come thirsty. The resort, which opens on December 20, is introducing an abundance of wine-centered amenities that will entice any vino-enthusiast. With a new master sommelier and a collection of wine that will be among the largest and most valuable selections in Cabo, it would be a shame to not book a room now.

Leading the development of the extensive wine program is the resort’s new Master Sommelier, Don Pedro Poncelis Brambila who has decades of knowledge to pour out and share. With more than 30 years of experience, Don Pedro Poncelis Brambila studied under the Catalan master Don Juan Muñoz Ramos, recognized as the third best sommelier in the world. In addition to serving as the sommelier of the Hotel Presidente Intercontinental for the past 20 years, Don Pedro Poncelis Brambila has also been honored with a variety of impressive titles over the years like “Best Sommelier in Mexican Wines and Spirits in France,” Mexican representative in the “Grand Prix du Sommelier Sopexa ’97” in Paris, “Best Mexican Sommelier” from the Mexican Association of Sommeliers and recognized internationally as the best in Latin America with a Wine Spectator “Award of Excellence.” He is also the founder of the Mexican Association of Sommeliers where he was president from 2010 to 2013 and is currently an honorary member.

The wine program at Grand Velas Los Cabos will be inspired by the Baja California wine region and will feature a wine list comprised of 50 different varietals including sparkling, red, white and rose. The wines will be from several grape varieties from top regions like the north of Baja California and its valleys and will be curated by Don Pedro Poncelis Brambila who will also develop a supplemental list of more than 200 wines from around the world that will be available by the bottle.

Thirsty yet? Guests can look forward to a minimum of 50 wines that will be included in the resort’s nightly rate including fine Mexican wines like Casa Magoni, Casa Madero, La Carrodilla and L.A. Cetto or guests can splurge for a prestigious bottle from the international list, like the best of Baja, Baron Balche “O.”

In addition to an impressive list of guzzle-worthy sips, Don Pedro Poncelis Brambila will also implement various wine offerings for resort guests, like food and wine pairings and wine tastings. In 2017, the resort will also introduce a spectacular getaway for those looking to take their love for wine to new heights. The resort will launch an over-the-top getaway for millionaires that whisks guests via private jet to the bodega in Ensenada where Velas Resorts buys its Mexican wines. Cheers to that.
