Green School Tulum to Open in 2025, Bringing High Quality, Ecologically-Minded Education

The Green School Tulum is set to open in 2025 and will provide students with a unique, ecologically conscientious and meticulously-designed curriculum.

Located within the jungle, and only a few miles away from crystal blue waters, the school is currently being built with sustainable materials—mainly bamboo and recycled objects—to create an ecologically harmonious structure that connects students with their environment. Sustainability, a cornerstone of the Green School’s structure, begins with the building itself, as energy production, waste management, and other systems have been thoughtfully selected to minimally impact the environment, while also providing an example to the students and community that ethical designs are functional and effective.

This philosophy of learning through practice and experimentation can be found throughout the Green School’s curriculum as unconventional classes accompany rigorous academic courses. Comprehensive foundational classes of math, science and languages are expanded upon with hands-on experience and active environmentalism.

This form of integrated learning at the Green School Tulum will offer unique benefits for young learners, including:

  1. Environmental Awareness: A focus on fostering an in depth understanding of the environment’s intricacies cultivates a deep appreciation for the natural world in young children. Through hands-on experiences and engaging activities, students learn about sustainability, conservation, and the importance of protecting our planet.
  2. Holistic Learning: The school emphasizes a holistic approach to education, considering the physical, emotional, and social well-being of each child. This approach aids in the growth of a child’s well-rounded individuality as students develop their own sense of balance, self-awareness, integrity and empathy.
  3. Connection with Nature: The unique property and curriculum of the Green School provides specialized opportunities for children to connect with nature on a daily basis. The school’s lush surroundings, gardens, and outdoor learning spaces allow students to explore and appreciate the natural world, nurturing a sense of wonder and curiosity.
  4. Project-Based Learning: The Green School’s encouragement of project-based learning allows children to actively participate in their education and foster a strong community. By engaging in hands-on projects and problem-solving activities, students develop critical thinking, creativity, responsibility and collaboration skills.
  5. Healthy Lifestyle: Interwoven within the coursework and the daily flow of activities is the promotion of a healthy lifestyle. Children have access to outdoor sports facilities and engage in activities that promote overall well-being by emphasizing physical activity, nutritious food choices, and mindfulness practices.
  6. Global Awareness: The Green School embraces a global perspective, exposing students to a variety of cultures, languages, and ideas. From a young age, students will foster a sense of openness, tolerance, and appreciation for diversity.

The Green School Tulum offers a nurturing and inspiring environment where students can learn, grow, and develop a strong foundation for their future.

A sister school to the Tulum location, the Green School in Bali opened in 2005 and has since succeeded in its pursuit of these common academic and community goals. The Bali school boasts bamboo classrooms, a shared exhibition space to display students’ works, and an open air performance room. These are just some of the many structural designs of Green Schools that help shape and benefit their unique learning process.

Researchers at Seneca’s Maret University conducted an in-depth analysis of the educational benefits that evolve out of the sustainable, integrated designs of the Green School, Bali. In this analysis, they found that incorporating physical structures within and around the local environment create an entirely new educational system that differentiates from the traditional, more limited learning process of the typical classroom.

Instead of the strict boundaries between subject matter, the Green School’s commitment to environmentalism across every aspect of the education process provides students with a learning environment that inspires them to be more thoughtful of the world around them. Cultivating crops daily, enjoying campus produce, and eventually repeating this process, ingrains a habitual familiarity with sustainability. To be immersed in effective environmental sustainability firsthand teaches children the impact humanity has on the sensitive balance of the world around us. By the end of their education, Green School students are prepared to be well-rounded change-makers of the world.
