Gala de Danza: Beautiful Artistry in an Extraordinary Place

In Los Cabos, Play by Suzanne Koch

A beautiful escape into the world of dance is Cabo San Lucas’ Gala de Danza, a central community for young dancers. Started in 2013, Gala de Danza is a yearly event that brings together some of the most elite dancers, choreographers and musicians from 15 different countries to grace the stage at the Pabellón Cultural de la Republica. The organization was founded by Christina Lyon who was in American Ballet Theatre and a guest artist at English National Ballet in London and Bavarian National Ballet in Munich. She also trained with Yvonne Mounsey, former principal dancer with New York City Ballet. With so much dance experience and passion under her belt, Lyon’s aim in creating Gala de Danza was to gather top-notch talent in the dance community in one place to generate excitement and opportunities for young dancers. The event is also in collaboration with Lulu Téllez of Danza Téllez, Cabo’s premier ballet school, and is designed “to encourage Téllez’s students to see what artists do; to make them hungry and eager to see that they too can have a career in dance,” says Lyon.

A recent, private event on December 27 revealed the highly anticipated list of artists that will appear at the 2016 Gala de Danza event that will take place June 3-4. The evening also featured a performance by renowned principal dancer Adiarys Almeida and a performance by 19-year old German dancer, Sarah Schafer, who recently won first place in the Youth America Grand Prix, Senior Division in Paris and who will be competing in finals in New York in April.
